This is an excellent question. It happens to be one of my favorites. When someone seriously asks about what it takes to get to heaven, I am always happy. There are two things that are needed in order to acquire salvation.

First we need to repent, that means to "turn away" from sinful things in our life. Basically if you are headed towards sin in any area of your life, you need to notice that and work to change your course. You do not want to continue walking that way. Repentance is like apologizing to someone. You can say "sorry" and not mean it and therefore it's pointless but if you say sorry and mean it and try your hardest not to do it again, then your apology is real.

The second and most important part of recieving salvation is by believing in what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross. He sacrificed himself for our sinful lives so that even when we sin, no matter what we do, if we truly repent and apologize and ask for his forgiveness, he will forgive us. Only his forgiveness is going to get us to heaven, John 14:6 says "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"

If you want to go to heaven, you need to be forgiven. We are sinners and we cannot get rid of that, we are all going to be guilty when we are judged by God, only some of us are going to be forgiven. I hope you are right with God and if you aren't, realize that this is your chance, we aren't guaranteed tomorrow.
